WASTE MANAGEMENT
We use a four-bin system of waste sorting:

• Organics
• Waste-to-landfill
• Cardboard and paper (for stall holders)
With colourful bin tops and clear labeling, festival patrons quickly get into the spirit of sorting their rubbish. Not only does it enable us to minimise the amount of waste going to landfill but at the same time we are educating people about recycling and composting and encourage them to consider using these practices at home. Bin monitors oversee each bin sight to help patrons with any queries they have and make sure everything ends up where it should.

SULO manufacture wheelie bins and colour coded bin tops. Waste removal and recycling companies such as WSN, SITA, and VISY service commercial operations. Check which company services your area.
Check with your local council’s Waste Education Officer to see what additional services may be available in your Local Government Area. For example the Council may own bin tops and signage, which can be loaned out to local events.
The most important component to successful waste management is signage. It must be clear, concise and easy to understand. Ensure people are informed, prior to the event if possible, that waste minimisation is an aim. Get your event MCs to encourage your audience to actively participate in your recycling and waste management program.
Bin monitoring is an extremely effective way to educate your audience and minimise cross contamination in the bins. Allocate staff or volunteers to ensure patrons use bins the right way.
And check bins regularly. If landfill waste bins are full your alternative waste streams will quickly pollute.
TOP TIPS
• Apart from clear signage also display a sample of each bottle or container relevant to the recycling bins and organic waste bins to make it easy for people to understand.
• Allocate enough people to monitor the bins. As soon as they start looking messy, waste sorting will stop.
• Use coloured bin tops and if available see-through bins.
