POWERING YOUR EVENT

BIODIESEL

In 2005 Peats Ridge was the first major event in Australia to be completely run on renewable energy resources. All the Festival’s generators were run on 100% biodiesel.

Biodiesel is a diesel fuel substitute made from vegetable oils or animal fats. It is made from renewable resources, drastically reduces fossil emissions, is reliable and is price competitive. There simply is no reason not to use biodiesel in generators at your event.

PremiAir Hire who have supplied generators to Peats Ridge have committed their entire fleet of diesel generators to biodiesel, so now anyone who hires from them has the choice to reduce the use of fossil fuels and harmful pollutants at their event.

Biodiesel fuelled generators power the entire festival site. This includes power for sound and lighting production, market stalls, festival lighting, etc.

BIODIESEL AND THE ENVIRONMENT

There is a reduction in carbon monoxide emissions by up to 50 per cent and Biodiesel is relatively non-toxic to animal or marine life, since it biodegrades relatively quickly in the case of an accidental spill.

Another important consideration when using biodiesel is whether the source of biodiesel is from 'first-generation' or 'second-generation' biomass (biological matter). First-generation biodiesel is produced from food crops, and ultimately reduces the quantity of food available for human consumption. The goal of second generation biofuel processes is to extend the amount of biofuel that can be produced sustainably by using biomass consisting of the residual non-food parts of current crops, such as leaves, stems or husks that are left behind once the food crop has been extracted, as well as other crops that are not used for food purposes, or industry waste such as woodchips and pulp from fruit pressing.

COSTS

High and rising oil prices make biodiesel more competitive however it is still slightly more expensive then traditional diesel. Biodiesel promotes growth in rural economies through its use of agricultural products and reduces dependence on fossil fuel. Event organisers should appreciate that biodiesel has a lesser calorific energy level than traditional fuel diesel so a greater volume of fuel will be required to satisfy similar energy loads.

LOGISTICS

When booking your generators request they be run on biodiesel.  Your generator company may be able to supply the fuel or you can source it independently. Ensure the fuel you source complies with engine requirement and standards. See the Biodiesel Association of Australia website for more information on suppliers.

TOP TIPS

·         Use biodiesel to fuel your generators.

·         Use a generator company that supports the use of biodiesel.

·         Ensure supplier has set generator to biodiesel requirements.

·         Ensure there is someone on hand to keep an eye on generators. You may need to change filters as biodiesel cleans tanks when first shifting plant from standard diesel.

POWERING WITH SOLAR

SOLAR POWER AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Most electricity in Australia is generated by burning coal, which emits carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, trapping heat, and increasing temperatures…climate change.

Solar Power offers a clean silent and renewable energy that can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and has the potential to significantly reduce household power bills.

LOGISTICS

The solar cell is the heart of a solar electric system. This is where the sun's energy is captured and turned into usable electricity for everyday use. Although making solar cells requires advanced technology, when connected together in a solar module, they are simple to use.

Your solar power supplier will most likely hire you a trailer-based setup. You will need to know the load requirements of the gear you want to power, and for the length of time. Of course you also need a sunny position to locate your solar rig.

Can I run my whole festival with solar power?

In theory the answer is yes, but in reality it is rarely practical due to the very high power demands at festivals and their temporary nature. Large generators (preferably biodiesel powered) are better suited to the primary power demand with solar power used for discrete loads such as:

·         Areas with reasonable loads a long way from power

·         Small loads like laptops computers, eftpos machines and small pa's

·         Lighting for entrance ways, toilets etc

·         Variable message boards

·         Recharging electric vehicles

·         Running energy efficient refrigeration

Are there any things I need to consider for solar power set-ups?

Yes there are a few considerations that will greatly benefit the effective use of solar power at your event.

Solar systems need to be installed in the sun! Shaded sites under trees, deep valleys or sites with poor solar orientation can dramatically reduce the effectiveness of solar systems. Careful planning can be conducted with the help of solar energy professionals.

TOP TIPS

·         Choose areas of your event that will have full sun throughout the day.

·         Power stages and equipment that will offer high visibility to promote the use of solar to patrons.

·         Have your electrician liaise with solar providers to assess load requirements.
