CUTLERY AND CROCKERY
To further reduce waste going to landfill all disposable packaging from take away food stalls at Peats Ridge are compostable.
Biodegradable plates and containers are available from a range of suppliers.
Food stalls are also requested not to use single serve sachets or plastic straws.
Markets stalls are requested not to use plastic bags or excess promotional leaflets.
Traditionally we have used cornstarch cutlery a more readily biodegradable material then traditional disposable products. While cornstarch will eventually break down it will not compost in the majority of commercial composting systems. Instead we are moving across to FSC certified wooden cutlery.
COSTS
Costs of food packaging materials that are compostable are relatively comparable to plastic based packaging.
LOGISTICS
All market stallholders are told prior to the event they are required to use compostable packaging. Products are supplied by Peats Ridge in partnership with manufacturers enabling bulk purchase and competitive pricing.
TOP TIPS
• Use biodegradable and compostable cups, plates, bowls, cutlery and food boxes.
• If you are setting up onsite composting, make sure all food stall staff and patrons understand to place used materials in the organic waste bins.
• Signage Signage Signage! Educate patrons about these environmentally friendly alternatives to plastics and polystyrene.
• Place a bond on stalls, which is not refundable if they do not comply with packaging, waste management and chemical free cleaning requirements of your event.
